Comments Off on Uefa Nations League: How does the new international tournament work? Tables, fixtures and permutations

UEFA Nations League kicks off its inaugural tournament on September 6 in what is seen as a competitive alternative to international friendlies.

While qualifiers for European Championships and World Cups will still take place around this competition, it gives teams extra opportunity to reach those major finals.

The Uefa Nations League will include promotion and relegation, while also giving teams an extra opportunity to reach Euro 2020

There will also be a system of promotion and relegation, which will see more games between the best sides in Europe.

England will face their World Cup conquerors Croatia in the Uefa Nations League

What are the permutations involved in Uefa Nations League?

  • The Uefa Nations League will take place between each major tournament and feature alongside qualification for the World Cup and European Championships
  • Nations League A is filled with teams ranked 1st to 12th in UEFA team coefficient rankings
  • Nations League B is filled with teams ranked 13th to 24th
  • Nations League C is filled with teams ranked 25th to 39th
  • Nations League D is filled with teams ranked 40th to 55th
  • Winner of each group in Nations League A will play in knockout rounds, including final and third-place match in June
  • The four group winners in Nations Leagues B to D will be promoted to the league above
  • The teams finishing bottom of their groups in Nations Leagues A and B will relegated to the league below
  • The three sides finishing bottom of the four-team groups in Nations League C will relegated, along with the lowest-ranked third-placed team
  • This will become the norm for future competitions for deciding places, instead of coefficient rankings
  • For qualification into Euro 2020, each league will hold play-offs in March 2020 between the four highest-ranked teams that have not already qualified for the tournament
  • Those teams will play each other to decide a winner from each Nations League that will secure progression to the competition
  • It has not been confirmed if this system will also be used for the World Cup in 2022
