Tottenham Hotspur have hijacked Arsenal’s move to sign William Saliba, according to RMC reporter Mohamed Bouhafsi.
The north London side have been linked with a move to sign the promising French teenager in the summer transfer window so far.
Arsenal were thought to be in negotiations with Saint-Etienne over a deal to bring the 18-year-old to The Emirates.
The Guardian reported last week that Arsenal were closing in on a deal for the Saint-Etienne centre-half, including a clause that would see Saliba return to the French club on loan next term.
However, respected RMC reporter Bouhafsi has taken to Twitter to explain why Tottenham Hotspur are leading Arsenal in the race to sign Saliba ahead of the new Premier League season.
Bouhafsi wrote on Twitter: “#Tottenham have just outbid #Arsenal for William #Saliba, offering €30m excluding bonuses, which goes above & beyond Sainté’s demands. #ASSE are meeting tomorrow #Tottenham to discuss this situation!”
The 18-year-old made 16 Ligue 1 appearances last term to get some vital experience under his belt.
Saliba has represented France from Under-16 level to the Under-20 team.
The 6ft 3ins teenage defender made his professional debut for Saint-Etienne in a 3-2 victory over Toulouse in September 2018.
Arsenal completed their first summer signing earlier this month when Gabriel Martinelli completed a £1.6m move to Arsenal from Brazilian club Ituano.
The Gunners finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a spot in the Champions League.
