Thibaut Courtois has insisted he meant no disrespect towards his former club Chelsea FC after he made comparisons with his new employers Real Madrid.

Courtois moved to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer in a deal believed to be worth £35m, which ended his seven-year stay in England with Chelsea FC.

The 26-year-old shot stopper was revered as one of the best goalkeepers in England throughout his time in the Premier League and won two Premier League titles at Stamford Bridge.

He cited missing his family in Spain as the main reason for his move to Real Madrid during the transfer window, but he made comparisons between Chelsea and the European champions last week which were widely condemned by supporters.

Courtois implied that the standard of football is higher in Madrid and he has now come out to justify his comments in the wake of a wave of criticism.

As per the Evening Standard, he told reporters on Sunday: “Obviously you get some things in the media like I said there was not enough quality at Chelsea.

“I never meant that, I just said maybe in training it goes a little bit faster but the quality of Real Madrid – that is not saying Chelsea does not have quality.”

Chelsea replaced Courtois with Spanish number two Kepa in the final days of the transfer window, who joined the club for a record fee of £72 million.

The former Bilbao ‘keeper has adapted quickly to life in the Premier League as Maurizio Sarri’s team have won all four of their games at the start of the 2018-19 season.
