Robin van Persie has warned Paul Pogba that the French midfielder needs to speed up his distribution at Manchester United.
The France international was criticised for his subdued performance in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with top-four rivals Arsenal at Old Trafford on Monday night.
Pogba was unable to have a big impact on the Premier League clash, although the World Cup winner was making his return from an injury lay-off over the past couple of months.
Pogba finished the Premier League clash with 81 per cent pass completion – and the French star was dispossessed on three occasions during the 1-1 stalemate.
Former Manchester United striker Van Persie believes that Pogba needs to speed up his passing to find his team-mates rather than slowing down the game as he did against Arsenal.
“I do think it’s important for Pogba himself [to know his position], because he’s a world-class player,” Van Persie told Optus Sport, as quoted by Metro.
“In my opinion he has it all – he can give assists, he can dribble, he’s strong, he’s fast, he can score.
“But I think for him, for the coach, for everyone, it’s important to choose a position. Choose where you think and where the coach thinks he plays the best football for the team.
“I would play him not as a defensive midfielder and not as a number 10 but in between, so a number eight.
“So he still has his freedom, he’s not judged on 20-plus goals a season, if he plays there and scores 10-plus goals, if he makes assists, everyone will look different at him then.
“But it needs to be clear for everyone, if he’s a number eight, judge him on that.”
Scott McTominay broke the deadlock in the first half at Old Trafford before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang levelled after the break to secure a point for the visitors.
Manchester United are in tenth place in the Premier League table and 12 points adrift of leaders Liverpool FC after seven games.
The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013, when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge at Manchester United.
The 20-time English champions will take on Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League on Thursday night.
