Pundit uses Eden Hazard to make point about Harry Kane

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson doesn’t believe Harry Kane is suffering from tiredness and has used Eden Hazard to make his point.

As Tottenham’s number one striker, Kane has found himself playing in the starting XI week in week out for the majority of 2018 and was ever-present for England at the World Cup in Russia.

Question marks over his fitness were raised at the back end of the tournament as his performance level dropped considerably and he seems to have transferred that same form back to club level at the start of the season.

Although he has managed to find the back of the net twice in the opening four games of Tottenham’s Premier League campaign, Kane has often struggled to get involved in the build-up play and have an influence on the team in attacking areas.

In stark contrast, despite playing just as much football as the Spurs striker, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard is in scintillating form, which ex-Arsenal midfielder Merson uses as an example to explain Kane’s dip in performance.

“There isn’t a debate about Hazard being tired is there? He’s been phenomenal for Chelsea since the World Cup,” Merson told Sky Sports News.

“Sometimes it’s just a lack of form and people blame it on tiredness. That happens in football – you can’t play well every week.

“Kane is just lacking in a bit of form – if you look at his career then he’s either hot or cold, nothing in between.

“He could score twice on Saturday, twice in midweek in the Champions League and all this talk of tiredness will be in the past.

“It’s not like he runs around like a Jamie Vardy is it? His shot count has dropped but who says that’s down to tiredness?”

The England centre-forward is likely to start for Spurs against Liverpool on Saturday afternoon and supporters will be hoping he can have a big impact on proceedings at Wembley.

Liverpool are currently joint top of the league and will be difficult to break down, but if Kane can reproduce his best form then Tottenham have a great chance of getting back to winning ways.

Mauricio Pochettino has demanded that Spurs finally win some silverware this season and therefore they cannot afford to lose this weekend, as they bid to stay in touch with the frontrunners in the race for the title.
