Mark Lawrenson is backing Newcastle United to claim a 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the Premier League at St James’ Park this weekend.
The Gunners head into their trip up north looking to make it three wins on the spin in the Premier League as they bid to try and get their campaign on track under new boss Unai Emery.
Arsenal have recovered well from losing their opening two games of the season against Manchester City and Chelsea FC by securing back to back wins over West Ham United and Cardiff City.
The north London side will now be aiming to string together a set of positive results as they look to try and mount a challenge for a top four finish under Emery this term.
However, former Liverpool FC midfielder Lawrenson is expecting to see the Magpies take all three points when they welcome the Gunners to St James’ Park this weekend.
Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Lawrenson said: “Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has had some stick for the way he has been setting his teams up so defensively, although the Magpies fans are still very much on his side.
“Saturday will be no different – you know his focus will be as much on stopping Arsenal as it is on how his own team get forward.
“I just have a feeling it might work this time. Arsenal’s players are not the only ones who have been away on international duty of course, but this might be a good time for Newcastle to play them.
“Benitez’s side beat the Gunners at St James’ Park last season, to effectively ensure they stayed up, and I am going to go for the same result.”
Arsenal are aiming to challenge for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season after the north London side ended up in sixth place and without a trophy last term.
The north London side have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
