Mark Lawrenson believes that Paul Pogba will get his way and secure a transfer away from Manchester United sooner rather than later.
The French midfielder’s situation at Old Trafford has been a constant source of speculation in recent days as his relationship with Jose Mourinho appears to have deteriorated.
The pair were pictured having a frosty exchange in Manchester United training on Wednesday after the Red Devils were dumped out of the League Cup at the hands of Championship side Derby County.
Most Manchester United fans would agree that Pogba has struggled to produce consistent displays for the Red Devils since his return to the club from Juventus two years ago.
And former Liverpool FC defender Lawrenson seems to be convinced that Pogba will eventually be successful in forcing a move away from Old Trafford.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Sport, Lawrenson said: “The situation at Manchester United is turning into a soap opera.
“Paul Pogba’s relationship with Jose Mourinho is not just in doubt, it is developing in front of our eyes – which is an absolutely ridiculous situation when you think of the size of that club.
“It would appear that one of the two has got to give, and it is probably easier to sell a player than it is to get rid of a manager.
“What complicates matters is that Pogba could and should be United’s best player, and I would love to know the part that Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola has played in all of this.
“It would appear he has sniffed the possibility of a better deal at Barcelona and is thinking “let’s get him out of Manchester United” which is the kind of scenario that I actually hate about football now.
“Whoever is behind it all, it looks like Pogba no longer wants to play for United and in the end the player will always get his way.
“It is a case of what does Mourinho do with him between now and 1 January?
“I would suggest that he tells him to stay and play and give 100 per cent until the transfer window opens and if he does that, he can leave.”
Manchester United are aiming to get back into winning ways in the Premier League this weekend when they travel to West Ham United on Saturday lunchtime.
They were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Wolves last weekend as they dropped yet more points in the top flight to leave them eight points of top spot after just six games.
