Chelsea FC midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek insists that he is ready to play regular football week in week out, despite only playing a bit-part role at the start of the season.

The 22-year-old is a product of the youth team at Chelsea and has been a part of the senior squad since 2014. However, since then he has only managed to make 34 appearances for the club and spent last year on loan on Crystal Palace.

His spell at Selhurst Park saw him produce his best football, as he established himself as a fixture in the starting XI under Roy Hodgson.

The Englishman’s displays earned him a place in the national squad for this summer’s World Cup finals in Russia, where he played his part in the team’s run to the semifinals of the competition.

Despite his rise to prominence, he has once again been reduced to watching on from the sidelines at the start of the Premier League season, only featuring as a substitute twice in Chelsea’s opening four games.

Loftus-Cheek believes that he is now ready to play more regularly, citing his time with Crystal Palace as proof of his credentials at this level.

He told Sky Sports on Tuesday: “Being at Chelsea, it’s a top club with top players. When I’m training at 17 or 18 with the first team, it was really good for my education playing with these top players.

“I really enjoyed playing and training with them, I could feel myself getting better every day and improving, but it got to a point where training wasn’t enough and you need the exposure in the Premier League.

“That’s when I took the chance to go to Palace, and even when that happened, I thought I could’ve done it earlier.

“I started really enjoying my football, playing in the Premier League every week, and I felt the benefits. The benefit of last season at Palace [was first-team football].

“I was fortunate enough to be fit for that period where it’s like a game every three days over Christmas, and I got my body used to being able to play, have a rest, then play on a Tuesday. That was massive for me and I coped with it well.”

Chelsea FC face Cardiff City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday as their 2018-19 campaign continues and Loftus-Cheek will be hopeful of grabbing his first start of the season.
