Jurgen Klopp has praised his left-back Andy Robertson after he was named Scotland captain by Alex McLeish last week.

Robertson’s first game as captain resulted in a 4-0 home defeat to World Cup semi-finalists Belgium.

But Klopp has been impressed with the 24-year-old’s recent progress, and backs him to be a leader in the future.

“Andy is a fantastic fella. He is a very smart and nice person,” he told the Liverpool FC website.

“He can be a leader in the future, 100 per cent.

“He made big steps in the last one-and-a-half years since we worked together. That’s really cool.

“He has made big steps in the last four or five years since he started his career. So, it’s a nice story.

“He is still young, but he is a leader already and he will be even better in that in the future.”

Robertson started his career in Scotland at Queen’s Park, before moving to Dundee United, and then south of the border to Hull City for a reported £2.85m.

He was part of the side Hull City side that got relegated in 2014 but helped the side get promoted back to the Premier League at the first time of asking a year later.

He made his Scotland debut in March 2014 and scored his first international goal later that year; the only goal in a 3-1 defeat to England at Celtic Park.

He joined Liverpool FC in 2017 and, whilst he was brought in to be a backup to Alberto Moreno, he quickly became their first choice left-back after Moreno was injured.

He is notorious for his enterprising runs down the left, a wicked delivery into the forwards, but also as defensively sound and hard working.
