Jose Mourinho has admitted that Manchester United need to beat Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday following a disappointing stalemate with Valencia on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils were looking to return to winning ways following a difficult run of results since Manchester United were 3-0 winners against Young Boys in their Champions League opener.

Manchester United were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw with promoted side Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League before the Red Devils lost to Derby County in the League Cup third round.

Mourinho’s extended their winless run at Old Trafford on Tuesday night after Manchester United were unable to find a winner against Valencia following a goalless draw in the Champions League.

Marcus Rashford hit the woodwork in the second half and Romelu Lukaku went close but Manchester United couldn’t beat Valencia’s impressive goalkeeper Neto.

Manchester United will host Newcastle in their next Premier League fixture on Saturday evening as Mourinho looks to sign off before the international break with a win.

Speaking at his post-match media conference following Manchester United’s stalemate with los Che, Mourinho emphasised the importance of their home clash against Newcastle this weekend.

“It is a not a bad result. Not a good result, but not bad,” Mourinho told BT Sport.

“We have two matches against Juventus to make points. It is a very difficult group, yes.

“We have Newcastle before the league stops then we have Chelsea and Juventus in three days. It will be good for the team if we can beat Newcastle.”

Manchester United lost 3-1 to West Ham United at the London Stadium last weekend to heap further pressure on Mourinho and his underperforming squad after seven Premier League games.

In fact, Mourinho has now gone four consecutive home games without a win for the first time in his managerial career but the visit of Newcastle should represent a chance to end this miserable run.

The former Chelsea FC and Real Madrid manager admitted that Manchester United’s attacking players are in a slump following their poor performance against Valencia.

He added: “We tried to do something we did well which was to stop a fast team on the counter attack.

“We knew we wouldn’t create 20 chances. Our attacking players aren’t in their best moments of confidence and individual level. We thought with three or four chances we would score and win the game.”

Mourinho was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s replacement in May 2016 and the Portuguese head coach led the Red Devils to success in the Europa League and the League Cup in his first season in charge.

However, Manchester United supporters are desperate to challenge their city rivals Manchester City for the Premier League title but Mourinho has been unable to transform the Red Devils squad into contenders.

His signings have also been scrutinised given the well-documented struggles of Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba in the Manchester United team.
