Graeme Souness: Why Liverpool FC can win Champions League and Premier League

Graeme Souness believes Liverpool FC are strong enough to win both the Champions League and the Premier League this season.

The Reds have made a strong start to the Premier League campaign to lay down an early marker in the title race.

Liverpool FC remain unbeaten after seven games to keep pace with defending Premier League champions Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were 2-1 winners against title rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley thanks to goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino.

The Merseyside outfit faced arguably their biggest test of the current campaign last weekend when Jurgen Klopp’s side made the trip to Manchester United.

Liverpool FC came from behind to rescue a 1-1 draw after Daniel Sturridge netted a thrilling equaliser in the dying moments of the game to cancel out Eden Hazard’s opener.

Former Scotland international Souness, who won three European Cups during his playing career at Anfield, explained why Liverpool FC are strong enough to compete on two different fronts.

“I think they have the potential to do really well in both competitions – and when I say ‘really well’ I mean win them,” Souness told Paddy Power.

“Jurgen Klopp’s a breath of fresh air, he’s different class. Whether he’s responsible or he’s part of a committee that’s responsible, the recruitment over the last three or four years has been sensational.

“They’re in great shape. If you’re a Liverpool supporter as I am, you’re very excited.

“They’ve signed a top goalkeeper. The back four – Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Van Dijk, Gomez – they could play a decade together. Van Dijk looks as if he could play until he’s fifty!

“I think Liverpool are the real deal. They’ve got strength in depth. Every manager should always be looking to strengthen, no manager’s happy with his lot, but there’s no obvious weakness in the Liverpool side.”

Liverpool FC haven’t won the Premier League title but have come close under Gerard Houllier, Rafael Benitez and Brendan Rodgers.

Indeed, the Merseyside outfit finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014 after finishing behind Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City.
