Gary Neville has warned Manchester United supporters to expect “ups, downs and lots of pain” in the Premier League this season.

The Red Devils lost 2-0 to West Ham United at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon to succumb to their second defeat of the season.

Manchester United have only managed to win two of their opening six games after goals from Andriy Yarmolenko and Aaron Creswell scored either side of half-time.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side didn’t really trouble the West Ham defence an awful lot as Marcus Rashford was forced off the pitch with an injury.

Manchester United have managed to collect eight points from their opening six Premier League games to leave them off the pace in the top-four race.

Former Red Devils defender Neville isn’t feeling particularly confident about Manchester United’s prospects in the Premier League this term.

“Solskjaer will realise that’s a poor performance and there’s a lot of work to do at the club but he’ll have known that anyway,” Neville told his Sky Sports podcast.

“I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised; I’ve said over the last few weeks, watching this team and squad that it’s not ready.

“There are going to be ups and downs and lots of pain. It was painful but it doesn’t make it any easier when you see it with your own eyes.”

Manchester United will have the chance to respond to their disappointment in London when Solskjaer’s men take on bitter rivals Arsenal in the Premier League on Monday 30 September.

The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013, when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge of the Old Trafford outfit.

Solskjaer signed Wales international Daniel James and English duo Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire in the summer.
