Ex-Manchester United defender Gary Neville insists that Paul Pogba must start delivering high-level performances on a regular basis amid transfer speculation.
Pogba moved back to Old Trafford for his second spell in Manchester back in 2016 and has since picked up a Europa League title and League cup winners medal playing in the middle of the park for the team.
However, he has rarely been able to display the technical ability, aggression and superb vision which has earned him his reputation as one of the best midfielders of his generation, often flattering to deceive in the middle of the park instead.
He has been ever-present for Man United at the start of the season and put in a man of the match performance against Leicester City on the opening day, but since then he has reverted back to the lazy, disinterested version of himself on the pitch.
Pogba was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona over the summer, which Neville believes can no longer be an excuse for his sub-standard displays in the famous red shirt.
“Neville the pundit on Pogba would say, ‘He’s a talented player but I want to see more consistency and leadership’,” said the former Man United stalwart in an interview with The Times.
“As a fan, honestly, part of me is that no one is bigger than the club and I am not interested in people who are looking left and right.
“So Paul, if you want to go play somewhere else, let’s make that work for you because Manchester United will be fine, don’t worry about that.
“The owner in me would do what United are doing at the moment, saying he is not for sale. They have to protect their asset but privately they might be doing a deal because they want to get their £90m back.
“If I was still in that dressing room giving personal advice it would be, ‘Paul, it’s obvious you want to play somewhere else but be professional. Don’t be someone who is seen as a mercenary or a mutineer.
“You don’t need to do that.’ So there are four ways to look at it — pundit, owner, fan, a personal word.”
For now, at least, Pogba remains a Man United player and it is crucial for Jose Mourinho’s men that he starts to reproduce his best displays for the club in the coming weeks.
The Red Devils kick off their Champions League campaign with a clash against Young Boys on Wednesday night.
