Gary Neville pinpoints where it’s gone wrong for Man United after Sir Alex

Gary Neville believes that Manchester United sent out the wrong message by sacking David Moyes back in 2014 – less than a year after he has been appointed as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have struggled to find consistent form since their most successful manager Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down at the end of the season in 2013.

Manchester United appointed Louis van Gaal as Moyes’ permanent successor at Old Trafford, but the Dutchman’s reign was cut short when they opted to bring in Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2016.

Mourinho has found himself under intense pressure at Old Trafford this season, with the Red Devils having struggled to find consistent form in all competitions.

They were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Spanish side Valencia at Old Trafford in the Champions League on Tuesday night, and they have already lost three times in the Premier League this term.

And former Manchester United defender Neville feels that the attitude of the club changed drastically when they opted to get rid of Moyes before his first season in charge was over.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, Neville said: “This mess started when United sacked David Moyes after eight months and we lost all sense of the values that the club had been built on for 100 years.

“It’s not the manager it’s the lack of football leadership above him. They are bouncing all over the place with no plan!”

Asked whether Manchester United were wrong to appoint Moyes in the first place, Neville added: “That’s another question but when they sacked him after eight months it went into pinball, reactive mode and chasing it! No plan…”

Manchester United will now look to regroup as they prepare for their Premier League clash against Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils have failed to find consistent form this term and they are 10th in the table – and already nine points behind early leaders Manchester City.

It is a shocking start to the new campaign from a team who were touted as genuine title contenders in Mourinho’s third campaign in charge of the club.

Many will argue that Manchester United failed to properly strengthen their team in the summer transfer window, with the Red Devils having only brought in Diogo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant ahead of the new campaign.

Nevertheless, time is running out for the Red Devils to click into gear and start showing some of the grit and desire the team were famous for displaying under Sir Alex.
