Eric Cantona has said that he would not hesitate if Manchester United asked him to be their manager.

He said would aim to treat players the same way they were treated by former boss Sir Alex Ferguson; with “love” and “praise.”

His comments came as he criticised the brand of football United are currently playing under José Mourinho.

“I would like to coach and if they called me I would go. I would enjoy it. They know where I am,” he told the Daily Mail.

“Then we would play creative football again. It would be great for the fans, like it was with Alex Ferguson – he allowed players to be creative, treated them as individuals.

“All felt loved. He was always praising. A good man, a good leader.”

Cantona appeared 185 times for United under Ferguson and repeatedly wrote himself into United history for both the right and the wrong reasons.

He still receives adoration for scoring a memorable chip against Sunderland in 1996, coupled with its iconic celebration.

However, he infamously kicked a Crystal Palace fan in the face a year previous to this, perhaps the most controversial moment in Premier League history.

Despite only ever managing France’s beach football team, Cantona would apparently run the ship in a similar way to his former boss.

Cantona has previously expressed his displeasure at the way United play football under Mourinho, whose side are struggling this term with two loses in four games.

Mourinho notoriously uses the press to send what could be perceived as mixed messages to his players, a tactic many believe is unsustainable.

Cantona may be aligned with this thinking, as the mock plans he laid out to manage United are the complete antithesis of how Mourinho goes about his work.
