Gary Lineker praised Scott McTominay for his performance in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford on Monday night.
Both sides were sloppy in possession in the opening exchanges but it was the Scot who fired the home team into the lead just before half-time.
McTominay gave Manchester United the lead in the 45th minute when he drilled home a solid shot into the roof of the net.
However, Arsenal equalised in the 58th minute when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang lifted a cute finish over David De Gea, with the goal confirmed by VAR after the Gabon forward was initially ruled out for offside.
Both teams had chances to win it in the second half but there was to be no third goal as the game ended all square.
England legend Lineker was impressed by McTominay and wrote on Twitter after his opening goal: “If ever a game needed a goal it’s this one. Tiny deflection but sweet strike from Scott McTominay.”
The former striker then chimed in with his opinion about Arsenal’s equaliser after it was confirmed by VAR: “Now that is exactly what VAR is for: the absolute howler.”
The result left Arsenal in fourth place in the Premier League table and level on points with fifth-placed West Ham United.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are down in 10th place after having collected just nine points from a possible 21 so far this season in the Premier League.
