Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has described David De Gea as a “leader” in the Manchester United team this season.
The shot-stopper has been handed the captain’s armband for Manchester United’s opening two games of the new campaign this term to underline his importance to the squad.
De Gea’s future at Old Trafford has been something of a source of speculation in recent months due to the fact that his current contract is due to expire at the end of the season.
However, Solskjaer has clearly moved to indicate the important role he thinks De Gea plays in the team by handing the Spaniard the captain’s armband for their Premier League games so far this season.
De Gea captained Manchester United as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Wolves at Molineux on Monday night.
And Solskjaer has now lifted the lid on his decision to hand the Spain international the armband.
Speaking at his post match news conference, De Gea said: “David’s wearing the armband because at the moment he is very much a leader in that group and he knows that we value him as one.”
Manchester United will look to return to winning ways this weekend when they take on Crystal Palace in front of their home fans at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils finished sixth in the table and without a trophy last term.
