Alan Smith praised Anthony Martial for a brilliant finish in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Wolves on Monday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to start with Martial as part of his front three alongside Marcus Rashford and Daniel James.

Martial is set to be used on a more regular basis this season following Romelu Lukaku’s move to Inter Milan.

The 23-year-old justified his inclusion in the 27th minute when he collected Rashford’s pass and found the roof of the net.

Martial’s clinical strike was his 50th goal for the club after the French striker moved to Manchester United in 2015.

Former Arsenal star Smith was full of praise for Martial following his opening goal at Molineux Stadium.

“It looks so simple but it was all about the timing of the run from Martial and the weight of the pass from Rashford,” Smith told Sky Sports.

“The space is there for him and he doesn’t need a second invitation. He catches it beautifully and makes a brilliant job of it.”

Wolves levelled in the second half thanks to Ruben Neves’ first goal of the Premier League campaign.

Paul Pogba won a second-half penalty following a surging run but the World Cup winner missed his spot-kick in the 68th minute.

Martial has netted 50 times in 175 games for Manchester United since his £36m move to Old Trafford from AS Monaco in 2015.

Manchester United will take on Crystal Palace in their next Premier League fixture at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils signed Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Leicester City defender Harry Maguire and Swansea City midfielder Daniel James in the summer transfer window.
