Garth Crooks has heaped praise on Joel Matip following his solid performance in Liverpool FC’s 2-1 win at Southampton at the weekend.
The Cameroon international has been a regular fixture alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the Liverpool FC defence of late and the 28-year-old has been in top form for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Matip helped the Reds to make it two wins from two in the Premier League on Saturday when Klopp’s side sealed a 2-1 victory at St Mary’s.
And Crooks feels that Matip deserves credit for the way he has been performing alongside PFA player of the year Van Dijk.
Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Crooks said: “Whenever Joel Matip plays for Liverpool he appears to be the one who is making all the last-ditch tackles, getting the ball smashed in his face and coming to Liverpool’s aid in a crisis.
“Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk looks beautifully groomed, hair swept back in a ponytail, strolling around looking like he’s just returned from a week in Vegas!
“Matip must get Van Dijk to do his share of the heavy lifting when the Reds are up against it away from home.
“I know Matip is the junior partner here but, come on, fair is fair.”
Liverpool FC will now turn their attentions towards their crunch Premier League clash against Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime.
Both the Reds and the Gunners have won their opening two games of the new campaign to start the season on a positive note.
Arsenal sealed a 2-1 win over Burnley in front of their home fans on Saturday afternoon as the Gunners target a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.
Liverpool FC won the Uefa Super Cup last week thanks to a penalty shootout win over Chelsea FC after a 2-2 draw.
