Juan Mata has insisted that he and his Manchester United team-mates are focused on improving their form after their disappointing campaign last term.
The Red Devils ended up in sixth place in the Premier League table and without a trophy after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was brought in to replace the sacked Jose Mourinho back in December 2018.
Manchester United enjoyed a mini-revival under Solskjaer but their form tailed off towards the end of the campaign as they missed out on silverware and Champions League qualification.
The Red Devils will now be focused on starting the season on the front foot as they prepare to welcome Chelsea FC to Old Trafford for their season curtain-raiser on Sunday 11 August.
Manchester United have scored five wins in a row in their pre-season preparations and Mata knows that the Red Devils now need to transfer that momentum to the Premier League.
Speaking to MUTV, Mata said: “We know we have to do better than last season and I think in this pre-season we are showing that we are good as a team, the atmosphere is good and the results are coming.
“I think the manager said it not long ago. The atmosphere is very good. We have very nice people in the dressing room, everyone trying to help.
“Everyone [is] demanding from each other, which is what I think we need to do in a club like Manchester United.
“In every single training we have to set higher standards; that’s the only way to compete and we know we have to do that.”
Manchester United have so far only made two new signings this summer after having tied up deals for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James.
It remains to be seen whether the Red Devils will bring in any more players before the transfer window closes next Thursday.
