Steve Nicol believes that it’s unlikely that Manchester United will be able to sign Gareth Bale this summer if Alexis Sanchez is still at the club.
The Red Devils have been linked with a move to bring the Wales international to Old Trafford for some time, with the latest reports suggesting that Manchester United may be set to explore a loan deal.
Manchester United are thought to be on the lookout for a number of high-profile signings this summer as they look to revamp their squad following a disappointing season.
However, ESPN pundit Nicol feels that the Red Devils will not be able to spend big on any major signings this summer until they have got their highest earner Sanchez off their wage bill.
Speaking in an interview with ESPN FC, Nicol said: “He [Bale] can’t go there. How can he go there?”
“They’ve already got a brace round their neck with Sanchez on £300,000-a-week.
“They’re gonna sign Gareth Bale, who won’t be able to play a full season, who’s gonna be on silly money as well?
“Manchester United have to go and sign four, five proven players that can actually get it done.”
Manchester United are out to bolster their squad after they finished in sixth place in the Premier League table and without a trophy last season.
They announced their first signing of the summer last week when the Red Devils agreed a fee with Swansea City to sign midfielder Daniel James.
Manchester United have not won the Premier League title since 2013, when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge.
