Arsene Wenger has heaped praise on Ajax for a brilliant performance in their 1-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night.

The Eredivisie side travelled to the English capital for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final as Ajax looked to secure their third successive victory on the road.

Erik ten Hag’s managed to beat both defending champions Real Madrid and Serie A giants Juventus on the road to eliminate two of the favourites for the competition en route to the last four.

Tottenham started the first leg as slight favourites after Spurs had beaten Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City in the knockout stage to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

However, the Premier League side were thoroughly outplayed by Ajax in the first half after Donny van de Beek’s first-half goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Although Spurs rallied in the second half, Ajax could have strengthened their position in the second half but David Neres’ attempt hit the woodwork.

Speaking to beIN Sports, former Arsenal manager Wenger admitted that he was impressed with Ajax’s performance in their 1-0 victory over Tottenham.

“I would say that, even under pressure, Ajax had that relentless desire to play when they could,” said Wenger.

“They have not yet the maturity of a Barcelona to keep the ball even when they are under pressure, but the desire is always there.

“And the desire created them a fantastic chances that Neres missed.

“I personally give a personal congratulation to their goalkeeper [Andre Onana]. They suffered with crosses and when he understood they were in trouble he came out and cleared the ball.”

Tottenham are in third place in the Premier League table despite a 1-0 loss to West Ham United in their last fixture.

Spurs are looking to reach the Champions League final for the first time in their history.
