Mauricio Pochettino is hopeful that Christian Eriksen will commit to signing a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Danish playmaker is widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s finest attacking talents and he has been earning lots of praise for his performances this season.
Eriksen was the star of the show on Tuesday night as he scored the vital winner to hand Tottenham a 1-0 win over Brighton in the Premier League to boost their top-four hopes.
The 27-year-old’s future has been something of a source of speculation in recent months and his current deal is set to expire at the end of next season.
Now, Spurs boss Pochettino has delivered the latest update on Eriksen’s situation as the summer transfer window draws nearer.
Speaking in an interview quoted by Sky Sports, Pochettino said: “It is a situation that is a very special situation, Christian is a special person, I think we are all special, different and we need to understand that.
“The timing for him or for the club to be agreeing something are maybe different to another player.
“I hope and I wish Christian can be with us in the future but I think Christian and us we are so open to talk and we will see what happens.
“I think it is so close to the end of the season, a lot of time to talk after and I think the most important thing now, not only for him, is for all the players to be focused and try to achieve the things we want.
“We have a lot of big things ahead and we need to be focused only to try and recover, train and compete.”
Eriksen has scored seven goals and made 12 assists in 32 Premier League games so far this season.
Tottenham will return to Premier League action on Saturday when they host West Ham United at their new stadium.
The Lilywhites are aiming to finish in the top four this season and they will take on Ajax in the Champions League semi-finals as they look to win their first major trophy under Pochettino.
