Paul Merson is expecting to see Manchester United miss out on Champions League qualification for next season.
The Red Devils find themselves with just a top-four finish in the Premier League to play for after their Champions League elimination at the hands of FC Barcelona last week.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was handed the permanent manager’s job at Old Trafford last month after an impressive start to his reign as interim boss, but the Red Devils have struggled to find consistent form in recent weeks.
Manchester United headed into this weekend’s round of games outside of the top four and facing an uphill battle to finish in the Champions League qualification spots.
And former Arsenal star Merson feels that the Red Devils are likely to miss out on a top-four finish this season.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports News before Manchester United’s trip to Everton on Sunday, Merson said: |Manchester United are a million miles off.
“They need to win the game [against Everton on Sunday] or they are out of the Champions League.
“But I don’t think they will get it [a top-four finish] – they are well short at the moment.
“Some of their results have been very fortunate. For me, the unbeaten run was covering over the cracks.”
Manchester United will return to Premier League action on Wednesday night with a crunch showdown against derby rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are aiming to at least finish in the top four after they ended up second and without a trophy under Jose Mourinho last term.
