Gary Neville praised Georginio Wijnaldum for his technique for Liverpool FC’s breakthrough goal in a 2-0 win at Cardiff City on Sunday evening.

Liverpool FC were looking to hoist themselves above defending champions Manchester City and to the top of the Premier League table ahead of Wednesday’s Manchester derby.

Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were all guilty of missing clearcut chances in the first half as Liverpool FC lacked a clinical edge in goal.

The Brazil international missed the pick of the chances when he was left with the Cardiff goalkeeper to beat but couldn’t find the net.

However, Liverpool FC finally made the breakthrough in the 56th minute when Wijnaldum powered a finish past the Cardiff goalkeeper from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner.

Former Manchester United defender Neville was impressed with Wijnaldum’s finish to help Liverpool FC secure a vital win in the title race.

“It’s been coming,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“When Trent hit it, I thought he scuffed it but he meant it. Wijnaldum drifted in from the edge of the box.

“It isn’t an easy finish but the contact is perfect. It’s a huge goal for Liverpool.”

Liverpool FC doubled their lead in the 81st minute when James Milner scored from the penalty spot after he replaced substitute Fabinho.

Neville, though, felt the penalty award was fortuitous after Sean Morrison was adjudged to have fouled Salah in the Cardiff penalty area.

Neville added: “It is clumsy from Morrison but Salah knows what he’s doing. He throws himself to the ground. Morrison needs to be a little bit clever. Get your hands off him!”

Wijnaldum has scored three times in 32 games in the Premier League this season.

Liverpool FC will take on Huddersfield Town at Anfield in their next Premier League game on Friday night.

The Reds are looking to win their first-ever Premier League title.
