Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he perhaps got too excited too soon about the prospect of welcoming Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain back to action for Liverpool FC.
The England midfielder has been sidelined since last April after having suffered a serious knee injury in the Champions League clash with AS Roma.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has been working hard on his fitness levels behind the scenes and he will be hoping to make a return to the first team before the season is out.
He made his return to action earlier in the month when he featured in an Under-23 game, but he only lasted for around 40 minutes before suffering a hamstring problem.
Now, Klopp has admitted that he will give the midfielder the time and space he needs to regain full fitness.
Speaking in an interview quoted by Metro, Klopp said: “One of the biggest mistakes I made here was being [publicly] excited about having Ox back.
“That put the focus on the Derby U23s game. Now we will keep him a little bit in the shadows.
“He will train and when he is ready to be properly back I will inform you – until then I will not speak about Ox!”
Meanwhile, Liverpool FC are set to return to Premier League action on Sunday when they host Tottenham Hotspur in the top flight.
The Reds currently find themselves in a tight battle with Manchester City for the Premier League title, as Klopp looks to try and steer the Merseyside outfit to their first major trophy since his appointment back in 2015.
