Chris Sutton doesn’t believe Jose Mourinho is the right manager to take Manchester United forward.

The Red Devils have made a poor start to the Premier League season to raise questions about Mourinho’s ability to revive Manchester United’s ailing fortunes.

Mourinho, though, bought himself some time thanks to Manchester United’s roaring 3-2 comeback win over relegation candidates Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

The Portuguese head coach appeared to be on the brink after the Magpies scored twice in the opening 10 minutes to silence Old Trafford.

However, Juan Mata’s free-kick and Anthony Martial’s super strike levelled the Premier League clash in the second half before Alexis Sanchez netted an added-time winner to seal three points.

Manchester United have already lost four times in all competitions this season, while Mourinho has clashed with club record signing Paul Pogba over the past few weeks.

Former Chelsea FC striker Sutton has grown weary listening to Mourinho’s persistent excuses and bitter remarks in the British media.

“It’s been a disastrous season for United,” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 live’s Monday Night Club.

“What is Mourinho doing to help the situation? All he does is play the victim. All the nonsense after the game – the Brexit, he gets blamed for everything – I don’t get it.

“Every press conference he goes in and is negative, negative, negative – obstinate, awkward. He should have drawn a line under things.”

Sutton added: “There has to come a time where there is a line drawn in the sand and he has to stand up and say ‘enough is enough’.

“All this ‘I’m being persecuted’ all the time – he’s not doing himself any favours.

“Mourinho isn’t the right man to take United forward and 15 minutes shouldn’t paper over the cracks and the way he has behaved this season.

“It has been appalling.”

Manchester United turned to Mourinho in May 2016 after Louis van Gaal steered the Red Devils to a disappointing fifth-placed finish in the 2015-16 season.

The Portuguese head coach arrived at Old Trafford with a rich pedigree in English football following a return of three Premier League titles, three League Cups and the FA Cup during two stints at Chelsea FC.

Mourinho led Manchester United to glory in the Europa League and the League Cup in his first season in charge for the Old Trafford outfit to immediately win over the club’s supporters.

While the Red Devils struggled for consistency last term, the former Real Madrid manager managed to steer Manchester United to a second-placed finish for the first time since the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

However, Mourinho’s side have been unable to breach the gap between themselves and Manchester City so far this season.
