Maurizio Sarri has highlighted areas which his Chelsea FC side need to improve after they put away struggling Southampton 3-0 at St Mary’s on Sunday.

Goals from Eden Hazard, Ross Barkley and Alvaro Morata were enough to ease Chelsea FC to victory and bring themselves level on points with title rivals Manchester City and Liverpool FC.

But Chelsea FC boss Sarri has pointed out that the Blues must do more to eliminate needless mistakes from their game if they wish to continue to compete with these two.

“We need to be able to be in control of the match,” Sarri told the Chelsea FC website.

“We can do better in the defensive phase, and sometimes also in the offensive phase.

“We did two or three counter-attacks wrong, four against three, or three against two, so we could do better.”

As Chelsea FC transition from one Italian style to another, they will be forgiven for not producing the perfect game yet.

Sarri’s mandate of bringing a more attacking game to Stamford Bridge than was seen under previous boss Antonio Conte has no short shelf life, and time will have been bought with a start to the season which is well and truly above expectations.

But such is the monolithic spending power at the top of the Premier League, near-perfection is required for a genuine and sustained title challenge; a fact Sarri has become aware of faster than some of his contemporaries.

And so, he is right to nit-pick the flaws in what was undoubtedly a commanding win.

Chelsea dominated possession completely in the opening exchanges, but it took them 30 minutes to open the scoring through Eden Hazard.

Despite all their possession, they never quite sucked the life out of Southampton who regularly tested goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga throughout the course of the game.

Sarri will be aware that on another day these chances would have been goals and dropping points at any stage this season will be a huge blow to any title credentials.

Chelsea FC must work on plugging these gaps as their rivals squeeze teams out of games in a way they yet are able to.

Attention to detail is the way to make these gains, and in his recognition of this fact, Sarri is showing his new employers the sort of leader he is.
