Darren Fletcher has warned Liverpool FC’s attacking trident of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane that it will be tricky for them to repeat last season’s brilliant form this time around.
The trio earned huge amounts of praise for their performances last term as they struck up a brilliant understanding up front for the Reds, and they improved further after Philippe Coutinho secured his transfer away from Liverpool FC to FC Barcelona in the January transfer window.
Salah alone hit 44 goals in all competitions to help the Reds to reach the Champions League final and finish in fourth place in the Premier League.
The Reds have come under a certain amount of scrutiny in recent days, with Jurgen Klopp’s men having failed to win in their last three outings in all competitions.
Klopp’s side slumped to a disappointing 1-0 loss to Napoli in their Champions League group stage clash in Italy on Wednesday night in their most recent outing.
Questions have been asked about Liverpool FC’s attacking trio following their last three games, but former Manchester United midfielder Fletcher feels that it is inevitable that they won’t constantly be at their best.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Fletcher said: “It’s going to be very difficult for them [Firmino, Salah and Mane] to repeat that feat that they did last season.
“I still expect them to score plenty of goals. But they do have pressure on them now, they do have replacements that they maybe didn’t have last year – Sturridge is fit. You know, he looks sharp.
“Shaqiri has brought something to the table as well. They’ve got a bench that, if it [their poor form] keeps to continue, that are definitely going to put Salah and Mane and Firmino under a little bit of pressure.
“But they were a massive part of Liverpool’s success so it’s a little bit early for that [to suggest they need rotating].”
Meanwhile, Liverpool FC are aiming to get back to winning ways when they take on Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
The Reds head into the game second in the table and level on points with Pep Guardiola’s men, but they will move top of the table if they are able to claim the three points in front of their home fans.
A win would be the perfect way for Klopp’s men to ring in the second international break of the season, as the Merseyside outfit look to try and establish themselves as one of the main contenders for the Premier League title this season.
Despite all of their thrilling attacking football, Liverpool FC are yet to win a major trophy since Klopp’s appointment at Anfield back in the autumn of 2015.
