Rio Ferdinand has accused Romelu Lukaku of being too “static” and has told the Manchester United to step his game up this season.
The Red Devils have already found themselves under considerable pressure this season after a stuttering start to the new campaign under Jose Mourinho.
Manchester United drew a blank in their Champions League clash against Valencia in front of their home fans on Tuesday night as they played out a goalless draw in the group stage clash at Old Trafford.
Mourinho’s men also slumped to their third Premier League defeat of the season on Saturday when they were beaten 3-1 by West Ham United at the London Stadium.
Most of Manchester United’s players have been considerably below-par this season, but former Red Devils defender Ferdinand feels that Lukaku in particular has a lot of room for improvement following his slow start to the new campaign.
Speaking to BT Sport, Ferdinand said: “Lukaku is so easy to mark at the minute, he’s static.
“He needs to make defenders think, he needs to start moving in behind, making your defender change position and change eyeline.”
Despite Ferdinand’s comments, Lukaku has still managed a reasonable return of four goals in seven Premier League games for Manchester United so far this season.
He has been a relatively consistent performer since his move to Old Trafford from Everton last summer – but like most of his team-mates, he seems to be seriously lacking in confidence at present.
However, the Belgian striker clearly has plenty of room for improvement – as do most of the Manchester United squad – as the Red Devils look to turn around their disastrous start to the new campaign.
Manchester United find themselves languishing down in 10th place in the Premier League table, and already nine points behind leaders Manchester City after their poor start to the season.
Their next chance for redemption will come at home to Newcastle United on Saturday evening, when they take on the Magpies at Old Trafford in front of their home fans in the Premier League.
Manchester United had started the campaign as one of the title hopefuls, but their poor form so far has left them focusing on trying to break back into the top four before anything else.
