Jamie Carragher has defended Mohamed Salah’s slow start to the season for Liverpool FC.

The Egypt international was one of Europe’s top performing players last season as he netted 44 goals in his first campaign at Anfield following his move from AS Roma last summer.

Salah was voted as the PFA player of the year as he helped Liverpool FC to finish fourth in the Premier League and reach the Champions League final, where they lost to Real Madrid.

The 26-year-old has made a slower start to the new campaign by his own high standards, with the attacker having scored three goals and made one assist in seven Premier League outings so far.

However, Carragher has defended the former Chelsea FC player for his form this season and believes that it will not be long before he comes good again.

Speaking to Sky Sports on Monday, Carragher said: “He’s not in great form, but I don’t really think he’s in bad form either.

“I think a little bit too much has probably been made of Salah’s form. He is only one goal down on last season.

“I hope Klopp is saying this to him about the goals he scored last season: if he doesn’t get over 40 goals, it doesn’t mean he’s had a bad season.

“Ian Rush was Liverpool’s greatest ever goal-scorer and he only got 47 in one season. He never got 47 again, he would score 25 or 30 goals a season.

“If Salah gets 25 goals a season then he’s had a great season.”

Salah will be expecting to feature for Liverpool FC when the Reds return to Champions League action on Wednesday night with a trip to Napoli.

The Reds are looking to make it two wins from two in their group after having kicked off their European Campaign with a thrilling 3-2 win over Paris Saint-Germain last month.
