Jamie Carragher has defended Jose Mourinho during the ongoing situation between the Manchester United boss and Paul Pogba.
The pair’s frosty relationship has been a constant source of debate over the last few weeks and they were pictured having a tense exchange in Manchester United training at Carrington on Wednesday.
The situation has been making the headlines this week after Mourinho confirmed that Pogba would no longer be the vice-captain of the Red Devils.
Pogba’s situation at Old Trafford has been a constant source of uncertainty and it remains to be seen if he will stay at Manchester United for the long term.
However, Carragher has sided with Mourinho during the situation and says that he would back the Portuguese coach ahead of the midfielder.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher said: “People are saying Mourinho is causing problems, taking the captaincy off him, but he’s not really a captain, is he, in terms of how he plays?
“He’s letting his agent speak negatively about the club, how can that happen if he’s that man for Manchester United, fighting for the club, fighting for the manager?
“If things are going on behind the scenes, in training, in hotels, things his agent is putting out, that can’t be right, and that’s one of the reasons Mourinho would take it off him.
“Jose Mourinho has got his own problems in terms of the end of the season, is he the right manager for Man Utd? But in terms of this confrontation, I’d be with Mourinho before I’d be with Pogba.”
Manchester United will aim to get back to winning ways in the Premier League when they travel to West Ham United on Saturday lunchtime.
The Red Devils finished in second place in the Premier League table last season and without a trophy in Mourinho’s second campaign in charge.
They have endured a stuttering start to the new season, only winning three of their opening six Premier League games.
