Chris Sutton insists that James Milner is the standout English player in the Premier League after his recent displays for Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp’s men are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table after winning all seven of their games at the start of the season, including a 3-0 win over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday.
Liverpool have emerged as genuine contenders for silverware in recent weeks and have received widespread praise for their attacking-minded performances and strength in defensive areas.
Milner has been a vital part of the team’s success playing in a midfield trio alongside Georginio Wijnaldum and Naby Keita, impressing with his dynamic style of play in the middle of the park.
According to Sutton, the 32-year-old is now the best English player in the Premier League.
Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Milner is the best English player in the league this season on current form.”
Milner will be expected to continue in the starting XI for Liverpool’s doubleheader against Chelsea this week, firstly on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup before Saturday’s Premier League fixture.
If Liverpool can emerge victorious in both fixtures then it would nail down their credentials as title challengers and send out an ominous message to the chasing pack domestically.
Manchester City has strong competition for their crown as the best team in England and Liverpool supporters will be hoping that the team can continue its upward ascent in the coming weeks as the tough fixtures pile up.
