Rio Ferdinand doesn’t believe Manchester United are genuine contenders to win the Champions League this season.

The Red Devils will get their European campaign underway on Wednesday night when Manchester United take on Young Boys in Switzerland.

Manchester United will be hoping to progress further than the round of 16 this season following a surprise 2-1 loss to La Liga side Sevilla in the first knockout stage last term.

Jose Mourinho’s side have won their last two Premier League games following a difficult start to the season to ease pressure on their Portuguese head coach.

Indeed, Manchester United eased to a 2-0 win at Burnley before the Red Devils hung on for a 2-1 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road last weekend.

The 20-time English champions are already six points adrift of Premier League leaders Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC after five games.

Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand doesn’t anticipate the Red Devils challenging for the Champions League crown this season.

“No, they aren’t and they won’t be,” Ferdinand is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

“They haven’t bought anyone in who is going to change that. They’ve got a Superman (David de Gea) in goal. If he’s not in goal I don’t know what would’ve happened over the last four years. The guys in front of him, there are inconsistencies every week.

“You can’t build a defence on people that aren’t going to be reliable. And then when people are in there they haven’t performed.

“Has (Victor) Lindelof worked? No. Has (Eric) Bailly worked? No. (Chris) Smalling and (Phil) Jones haven’t kicked on, given the potential they showed when they first came through the door.”

Ferdinand was part of the last Manchester United team to win the Champions League following their penalty shootout victory over the Red Devils in 2008.

Manchester United lost to FC Barcelona in the Champions League final in 2009 and 2011.
