Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville believes that Manchester United will end up finishing third or fourth in the Premier League this season.
Jose Mourinho’s men came second to local rivals Man City in the race for the title last year, but in truth they never really looked like winning the trophy, ultimately finishing 19 points behind their neighbours.
Digo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant were the only players brought in over the summer to strengthen the current squad, despite Mourinho pleading with club officials to sign an extra centre-back.
The Portuguese boss’s concerns have been vindicated so far this season as Man United have lost two of their opening four matches, conceding seven goals in the process.
Mourinho has faced criticism from all corners of the media and indeed from club supporters in the wake of the team’s poor form, although they did manage to pick up three points last time out against Burnley.
Watford are up next for Man United on Saturday, who have a perfect record with four wins out of four and could rub salt in the wounds by condemning Mourinho’s men to yet another defeat this weekend.
Ex-Man United defender Neville insists that the team will start picking up results consistently, but doesn’t believe they will end up finishing as high as last season.
“I think United will be third or fourth,” Neville told The Times.
“Believe it or not I liked the Tottenham game [when United lost 3-0], certainly the first 40 minutes.
“I watched [the win over] Burnley and thought it was really good. I am hopeful they have turned a corner.”
Man United fans will desperate to see their team pick up their third win of the 2018-19 campaign against Watford, but if they fail it could spell curtains for the 55-year-old boss currently in charge of the squad.
Mourinho has enjoyed success at every club he has managed during his illustrious career but his spell at Old Trafford has so far been underwhelming at best.
A good performance and three points on Saturday would go some way to changing that situation, but don’t be surprised if he is facing more difficult questions on Sunday after another disappointing result.
