Ruben Loftus-Cheek insists he is prepared to be patient as he waits for his chance to have an impact on the first team at Chelsea FC.

The 22-year-old has yet to start a match for Chelsea this season, featuring twice as a substitute in the club’s first four games of the new Premier League campaign.

The arrivals of Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic at Stamford Bridge this summer have served to massively increase the competition for places in the middle of the park, with N’Golo Kante and Fabregas also vying for a regular spot.

Loftus-Cheek is at the moment way down in the pecking order at the club, despite enjoying an impressive spell on loan at Crystal Palace last year which earned him a place in England’s World Cup squad.

The young playmaker has revealed that while he expected to have more games under his belt at this stage of his career, he is still content to bide his time in pursuit of a place in the starting XI under Maurizio Sarri’ stewardship at Chelsea FC.

He told Sky Sports: “Being 22 feels quite old, considering some of the boys were playing when they were 17 or 18.

“I’d like to have more appearances by now, but it’s just the way my journey has gone, and I just have to be patient with it.

“I can see it as a positive; I’m playing for England, playing well when I play, and that’s without too many appearances so it’s still raw in that sense.”

Loftus-Cheek’s next opportunity to impress could come on Saturday as the Premier League resumes following the international break.

Chelsea are scheduled to play Cardiff City at home, which supporters will expect to be an easy afternoon’s work for Sarri’s men.

Four wins out of four have seen Chelsea climb to the top of the table but they must not get complacent against Neil Warnock’s struggling Welsh outfit this weekend, who only narrowly lost to Arsenal in their last fixture.
