Gareth Southgate has revealed that Dele Alli missed England’s match with Switzerland on Tuesday after a muscle strain suffered during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by Spain in the Uefa Nations League.

Southgate, however, did say Alli would be fit enough to play a part in Tottenham Hotspur’s vital game with Liverpool FC at the weekend.

Despite the injury, Alli managed to play all 90 minutes against Spain at the weekend but Southgate is not willing to risk him in the friendly against Switzerland.

“Alli has just had a minor strain and should be fine for his club at the weekend I would think, but Tuesday’s game will come too quickly,” he confirmed at the England news conference on Monday.

Alli has completed 90 minutes in all but one of Spurs’ league games this season, coming off on the 80-minute mark after scoring in their opening day win over Newcastle at the Sports Direct Arena.

It was the second time Alli had scored on the opening day of the season, after having scored on the first day of last season, also away at Newcastle.

He made his England debut in the final round of qualifying for Euro 2016, coming off the bench in the 2-0 win over Estonia in October 2015.

He scored his first goal for the national team on the same day that he made his first start; scoring the opening goal in England’s 2-0 friendly win over France in November 2015.

His biggest moment in an England shirt came at the World Cup in Russia this summer, when he scored the second goal in the Three Lions’ quarter-final win over Sweden.
