While I’ve been there, Philip Hammond, the chancellor, has been taking questions in the Commons. As my colleague Peter Walker points out, he sounded mildly sceptical about the case for maintaining the freeze on fuel duty.

At Treasury questions Philip Hammond notes that the freeze on fuel duty has cost the government £46bn so far, and amounts to twice as much per year as spending on NHS doctors & nurses.

Useful context for the “war on the motorist” nonsense.
