Xherdan Shaqiri has praised the relationship that his new Jurgen Klopp boss at Liverpool FC has with his players.

He knew Klopp from his time in Germany, when Shaqiri was with Bayern Munich and Klopp was managing Borussia Dortmund.

Shaqiri cited the German’s character as one of the main reasons he chose to move to Merseyside in the summer.

He told the Liverpool FC Magazine: “He’s a very good coach, but for me the character he has is also important.

“He has a very nice character, you can joke with him, but of course you have to be focused on the pitch and give everything.

“You can see the relationship he has with the players all the time, he’s very friendly in speaking with them, and that was important for me in coming here and working with him.

“I knew him from Germany when I was at Bayern and he was manager of Dortmund.

“He wanted me to come to Liverpool and I wanted to work with him so I am very happy to reunite with him.”

Shaqiri joined Liverpool FC from Stoke City for a reported £13.5m, after Stoke were relegated to the Championship at the end of last season.

He started his career at FC Basel in Switzerland, making his debut in 2009 and drawing the attention of major clubs with stellar performances in European football.

He eventually moved to Bayern Munich in 2009 but despite scoring 17 times in 81 games across three years with the club, found himself out of favour and on the receiving end of much criticism.

He transferred to Inter Milan in January 2015, scoring three times in 20 appearances before moving to Stoke City just six months later.

His time at Stoke was mixed; at times he seemed to be the heartbeat of the team, capable of spectacular, match-winning moments but at others he seemed a dejected, laboured figure.

Shaqiri’s expression that he is loving his time under Klopp may come as a relief to Liverpool FC fans who thought Shaqiri may present them with similar problems he has presented elsewhere.
