Lee Dixon has admitted that he cannot see Arsenal finishing in the top four this season.
The Gunners have made something of a mixed start to the new campaign following the appointment of Unai Emery as Arsene Wenger’s successor at The Emirates.
Arsenal have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in 2004 and they have finished outside of the top four in the last two seasons running.
Emery has been tasked with steering Arsenal back up the Premier League table, with the Gunners having notched up wins against West Ham and Cardiff after back to back losses to Manchester City and Chelsea FC.
However, Arsenal legend Dixon believes that it is too early to expect the Gunners to be able to realistically challenge for a top-four spot this season.
Speaking in an interview with the Daily Star, Dixon said: “I look at the top four and the way the teams have started and I’m kind of going ‘This is going to be really hard’.
“Obviously Arsenal’s start, although we’ve picked up a couple of wins, we gave a huge amount of chances away against West Ham, and likewise there were opportunities in the other games.
“I’m not confident, it’s going to take a while and I look at the top four now and I’m going ‘Where are we going to get in?’
“We’ve got to improve a lot and other teams have got to slip up.”
Arsenal will look to try and challenge for the Premier League title in the coming seasons under new boss Emery.
The Gunners will return to Premier League action after the international break with a trip to Newcastle United later this month.
