Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw says Jose Mourinho motivated him to stay at Old Trafford this season.
Shaw hasn’t had the easiest few years since joining Manchester United from Southampton back in 2014 as he has struggled to break into the first team at the club.
Consistent fitness issues have restricted the 23-year-old to just 70 appearances in the famous red shirt so far, but he has featured prominently in the early stages of this season.
In fact, Shaw has been one of the team’s standout performers in their opening four games and has earned a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad as a result of his hard work.
The English defender credits Mourinho for not giving up on him and pushing him to improve, which has ultimately helped him re-ignite his Man United career.
As per Metro Sport, he said: “I think at times he got frustrated with me because he knew I could do better, and I look back at times and maybe he was right.
“He said he wanted me to stay and that motivated me a lot. [The last few years have been] very hard. Of course I had an unfortunate two or three years. That’s the in past, I’m just looking forward.
“My confidence is back. I am focused on the future and improving myself as a player & a person. I wouldn’t say I made massive changes on the nutrition side. I’ve cut out some of the silly things I was doing… you could say I’ve maybe gone from a kid to a man now.”
Man United have made a poor start to the new Premier League campaign, already slipping six points behind the early pace-setters after losses against Brighton and Tottenham.
However, if Shaw continues to perform at such high-level supporters will hope that he can inspire his teammates to do this same, which could help to spark a title challenge as the year progresses.
