A NEW programme on Channel 4 is tracking the weight loss journeys of ordinary members of the public.
The woman in charge is the ‘detox diva’ Galia Grainger – known for the cutthroat style and incredible results.
Who is Galia Grainger?
Galia Grainger, 60, is a weight-loss expert who lives in south London and has one grown-up son.
Originally from Uzbekistan, she grew up in the country and spent some time in Latvia before moving to the UK in 1989.
After working in Oxford Street, she admits she had a “nice life” but her weight began to spiral.
The Express quoted Galia saying: “Eating and drinking, I got fat.
“I have a petite frame and I ballooned to a size 18.”
After a number of different diets failed, and she sought inspiration closer to home.
The breakthrough came in 2006, and Galia said: “My grandma had fasted all her life for religious reasons and lived to 100. I thought OK, there must be something in this.
“At the time there was no 5:2 diet, fasting wasn’t something people did to lose weight.
“I lost four stone and went down to a size eight. My energy was amazing.
“I thought, ‘I’m sitting on a winner here’.”
The self-confessed ‘diet dominatrix’ founded Slimmeria, two weight loss retreats in Crowhurst, East Sussex and in Ilfracombe in Devon.
She bought the run-down property Sussex in 2010 and spent her life savings doing it up.
And her weightloss camp is now infamous.
She’s known for her no-nonsense attitude, previously telling guests: “I don’t care if you like me.”
According to Slimmeria’s website, a typical day’s menu looks something like this:
- Breakfast – Apple and carrot juice, etc.
- Lunch – A selection of delicious freshly prepared salads
- Afternoon Tea – A selection of fruit (e.g. pineapple, papaya, kiwi)
- Dinner – Chunky vegetable broth of carrots, peppers, tomatoes, cauliflower and onions
She added: “You find out quickly who hasn’t done their research.
“If you have the weight to lose you can shed 12 to 14 pounds. But it’s not easy.
“It’s 400 calories per day, preferably less. We practise a low-calorie, low-carb, non-starchy, cleansing diet full of antioxidants, with nothing processed.
“I am the bad cop. I do shout at the guests.
“I step in and say, ‘I’ve heard you’re not eating your food’ and they usually do after that.
“There’s only room for one drama queen at the retreat, me.”
Her methods may be harsh, but she says it is in fact incredibly simple to lose weight.
Galia said: “Eat less, drink water, move more. But people just don’t do it.
“In an ideal world we’d all be sensible but sensible doesn’t work, shocking does.
“My methods are extreme but essential.
“Desperate times call for desperate action, we are losing the battle of the bulge.
“People need to wake up and I’m the person to do it.
Her crisp attitude is backed up by her incredible results, with Galia claiming most of her clients lose up to a stone in just seven days.
The website says: “Eat clean, train dirty, lose weight, rejuvenate!”
