According to the Daily Mirror, Mourinho believed that spending £90million on the 33-year-old – as well as handing him £500,000-a-week on top – would not make sense.
Mourinho instead wanted the club to shell out on a host of defensive reinforcements.
But the Woodward failed to sanction moves for any of Mourinho’s targets, with the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Diego Godin staying put.
