JOSE MOURINHO stopped the Manchester United hierarchy for making a move for Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, according to reports.

Vice-chairman Ed Woodward was apparently ready to spend big on the five-time Ballon d’Or winner – but Mou said no.

According to the Daily Mirror, Mourinho believed that spending £90million on the 33-year-old – as well as handing him £500,000-a-week on top – would not make sense.

Mourinho instead wanted the club to shell out on a host of defensive reinforcements.

But the Woodward failed to sanction moves for any of Mourinho’s targets, with the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Diego Godin staying put.

The Portuguese boss is now fighting for his future after winning just one of his opening three matches this season.

United face Burnley on Sunday afternoon with some speculation that he could be sacked if they lose again.

Mourinho is furious that Fred, unproven Diogo Dalot and third-choice keeper Lee Grant were his only summer recruits.

Ronaldo eventually moved to Juventus after leaving Real Madrid, but is yet to find the target for his new club.
