LORIS KARIUS claims Jurgen Klopp begged him not to quit Liverpool to move to Besiktas.

Karius has made the move to Turkey on a two-year loan deal after seeing Liverpool splash out a then world-record fee to sign Alisson over the summer.

The 25-year-old paid the price for his nightmare display in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid last season which saw Klopp lose faith in him as a number one.

But Karius says Klopp didn’t want him to leave Anfield and attempted to convince him to stay on Merseyside and be part of his squad.

The German keeper said: “He told me he would like to have me in the squad because he wants to have the best-quality players.

“But I spoke to him and asked him for my wish. It is important to me to play for Besiktas. I talked with him for a long time and he understood my situation.

“It was a good deal for everyone. He wished me well but said he would have liked to keep me.

“I came here because I think I can make the next step in my career, improve as a player and also help the whole team to improve.

“I’m still young for a goalkeeper. I want to make the next step and hopefully win many titles with Besiktas.”

News that Klopp wanted Karius to stay will come as a surprise to some Reds supporters who had lost patience with the keeper following the European Cup nightmare.

The stopper was at fault for two of Real’s goals as Liverpool lost 3-1 in Kiev, as doubts over the keeper’s ability to perform at the highest level came to fruition in the worst possible way.

It left Klopp with little option but to target a top class signing over the close season, and he got his man by paying £66.8million to Roma for Brazilian star Alisson.

While Karius got his wish to leave for first team football elsewhere, it has left Simon Mignolet facing a year of frustration kicking his heels on the bench.

Mignolet had been targeted himself by Besiktas before the Karius deal went through, and has made it clear he is not happy with being only a back-up keeper at this stage of his career.

But Klopp is set to block his hopes of getting a move away from Anfield before the transfer window closes on Friday, because he needs someone dependable as understudy in case Alisson suffered an injury.
