THE victim of a harrowing hammer attack was hit in the face at least five times, a neighbour told The Sun Online today.
The woman, named locally as Anna Gos, was struck with the weapon after running to help her mum who was being attacked in New Eltham, South East London, yesterday afternoon.
Retired IT engineer Bob Gover, 69, captured the shocking incident on his CCTV camera which is outside his house on Adderley Gardens.
He handed police a copy of the footage yesterday and cops came back late last night to collect the machine it was recorded on.
Bob said: “My CCTV camera captured the footage of the attack.
“It was shocking. He attacked the mum first and Anna bravely ran over to confront him.
“He then hit her in the face with the hammer. He struck them both at least five times in the head.
“He didn’t hit any other parts of their bodies and it lasted about two or three minutes.
“I couldn’t recognise Anna at first, she was covered in so much blood.
“I phoned the ambulance and then later phoned the police when I heard they had been attacked.”
Witnesses said the incident left one of the victims with “her face hanging off”.
Joe Xuereb, 27, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Cops stood outside his home today which is just 40 yards from the attack.
Anna’s mum had been visiting her daughter from Poland at the time of the incident.
